What number will Gaz wear?

This was one of the first questions asked once Gary Ablett’s return to Geelong was finalised.

His two-time premiership teammate Jimmy Bartel may have given fans the answer on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking on Channel 7‘s coverage of Caulfield Cup day, Bartel said he thinks the dual Brownlow medalist will take the number 11 jumper vacated by Darcy Lang’s move to Carlton.

Bartel reminded viewers that Ablett wore 11 during his U18 days at the Geelong Falcons.

In his first stint at the Cats, Ablett wore number 29, now donned by the well-established Cam Guthrie, the number 9 he wore at the Suns is now occupied by Zac Smith, while his father’s famous number 5 belongs to Nakia Cockatoo.

Ablett returns to Geelong after seven seasons on the Gold Coast, joining the expansion club as its inaugural captain.

The Cats now boast an imposing midfield featuring the likes Ablett, Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood and Mitch Duncan.
