Broncos coach Vance Joseph challenges star WR Demaryius Thomas

Denver Broncos coach Vance Joseph is already asserting himself with the team’s star players. He’s letting it be known he expects more, especially from wide receiver Demaryius Thomas.

Thomas has had five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. Yet, Joseph is sending a memo telling Thomas he expects him to take the next step as a player.

“He’s a great player,’’ Joseph said, per Mike Klis of KUSA in Denver. “He can take over a game, but I want his mindset every game to be every game we play to walk on the field and take over the game. Again, running the football will force them to load up the box and give him 1-on-1 opportunities. I want him to win every 1-on-1. I want him to become a leader of our football team.”

Of course having a quarterback who can consistently get the ball to Thomas plays a huge role. Most believe Thomas is a top-5 wideout, but he does go quiet on the field far too often. Joseph took notice of that while breaking down the receiver. Another improvement Thomas can make is being more efficient catching the football. For the past five seasons, Thomas has been in the top eight in the NFL in dropped passes. He had seven last season and nine the year prior.

We’ll see if Joseph’s comments motivate Thomas.
