President-elect Donald Trump reportedly scolded high-level executives at several media outlets, namely CNN, for the coverage during the election cycle.
“It was like a [expletive] firing squad,” a source told the New York Post. “Trump started with [CNN chief] Jeff Zucker and said ‘I hate your network, everyone at CNN is a liar and you should be ashamed,’” he said.
Trump met with the media brass during an off-the-record meeting inside the Trump Tower. ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, CNN, and Fox News executives joined in at the event, AdWeek reported, citing “insiders” close to the matter.
Jeff Zucker, Wolf Blitzer and Deborah Turness are among the early arrivals for TV nets’ meeting with Trump
“The meeting was a total disaster. The TV execs and anchors went in there thinking they would be discussing the access they would get to the Trump administration, but instead they got a Trump-style dressing down,” the source continued.
Another source close to the matter confirmed what had happened. “The meeting took place in a big board room and there were about 30 or 40 people, including the big news anchors from all the networks,” said the unnamed person.
“Trump kept saying, ‘We’re in a room of liars, the deceitful dishonest media who got it all wrong.’ He addressed everyone in the room calling the media dishonest, deceitful liars. He called out Jeff Zucker by name and said everyone at CNN was a liar, and CNN was [a] network of liars,” the person noted.
Trump spokesperson Kellyanne Conway told reporters that the meeting was “excellent.” She further described Trump as “very candid and honest” during the gathering,” saying there is “no need to mend fences.”
New York Times executives and other media chiefs are slated visit the Trump Tower in the coming days.
“From my own perspective, it’s great to hit the reset button,” Conway added. “It was a long, hard-fought campaign. Donald Trump proved that he understood America and now he will be president to all Americans.”
CSPAN’s elevator live feed at the Trump Tower showed Zucker, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, NBC’s Deborah Turness, NBC anchor Lester Holt, CBS’s Charlie Rose, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, and many more.
