Sam Newman whacks Bob Murphy for taking grand final glory from Western Bulldogs teammates

SAM Newman has whacked retiring Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy for what he believes was stealing the glory of the Dogs’ 2016 premiership from his teammates.

Newman was met with a chorus of boos from The Footy Show crowd when he said Murphy, who missed the grand final through injury, shouldn’t have taken to the stage after the Dogs beat the Swans.

The Dogs have only a slim hope of making the finals and Newman said “the only bonus, if they don’t get to the final … they won’t have to go through the charade of finding a premiership medal for Bobby Murphy for not playing in the grand final.”

“Get out of the way, mate,” Newman said.

“You’ve been in every photo of the premiership and actually didn’t play in it.

“Let the players take the credit who actually won the thing.”

Hosts Eddie McGuire and Rebecca Maddern, along with fellow retiree Luke Hodge — who will play for the Hawks against Murphy’s Dogs in the pair’s last game tomorrow night — strongly disagreed.

“The reason why Bevo would have put him up there is because he helped turn the culture of that Football Club around,” McGuire said.

“They just want to show their respect for what he did for the club when they were in a really tough time.

“He accepted that on behalf of every red, white and blue heart that beat all the way through it, Sam.

“If it’s not for the people in the stands and the people who lived through … you’d be playing on an empty field without any emotion if you didn’t have the supporters and the people around the club.”
